Beijing Genomics Institute, Shenzhen
About Us Overview The Beijing Genomics Institute - Shenzhen (BGI-SZ) is a not-for-profit genome research Institute (Other branches of BGI include for-profit service divisions). It is a collaboration of BIG-CAS, BGI-HZ, BGI and other BGI’s affiliated Institutes, created around scientific programs and technological platforms. We use large-scale sequencing and bioinformatics analysis to further our understanding of gene and its role in life sciences, and to promote genomic-scale scientific approaches. Our platforms strongly support scientists to collaborate on important research projects. History Established in April 2007, BGI-SZ is the newest branch of BGI and the best reflection of the rich history of BGI and Beijing Institute of Genomics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (BIG-CAS). BGI was founded in 1999 and BIG-CAS was established by Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2002 based upon BGI. The research team from BGI has been the key player in the area of genome sequencing and research in China since its beginning. As one of the core centers of the International Human Genome Project, BGI has made tremendous contribution and established world-wide collaborations. The Institute also took part in the International HapMap Project and contributed to genome sequencing and analysis of several important species, such as rice, silkworm, chicken, pig etc. Being one of the largest genomics research center in China, we were in the battlefront of the fight against SARS in 2003. We isolated the new type of coronavirus, sequenced the corona virus genome, developed a fast-track SARS diagnosis measure-immunofluorescence assay and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. These achievements provided rather reliable, fast and low costing methods to cure and prevent SARS and build the foundation for developing vaccine and medicine. On April 20 2003, president Hu Jintao visited BGI and highly praised and encouraged the scientists and technologists in our center. Memorabilia Staff >Staff imformation Finding Us Travel Directions
