¡¡¡¡In April 2002, authorized by the State Development Planning Commission, National Engineering Research Center of Bioinformatics System co-founded by Chinese Academy of Sciences and Beijing Huada Genomics Research Institute. The center equipped with world top-raking computers and genome analysis instruments, established systematized and integrated technological platform for carrying out genomics and bioinformatics research and therefore formed the national engineering research center of bioinformatics system which tightly combined life science and information technology.

Basic development idea

¡¡¡¡With the biotechnology market in China and the world as the guidance, develop technological platform to storage, search, analyses and process bio-information, establish and consummate bio-information database with Chinese resource character and independent intellectual property, train high level professionals to meet the need of developing biotechnology industry, lay the foundation for sustainable development of life science and biotechnology industry in China. Provide information and counseling for the development of biotechnology industry and relevant fields and gradually become the world top-raking bio-information mining and research center. At the same time, find the new management model and running mechanism to reach a fine cycle of technology, talent and finance.

Major target tasks

¡¡¡¡Rely on Huada Genomics Research Institute, establish a large-scale, high through out and low cost DNA sequencing technological platform capable of competing in the world;
Carry out important genome research project at home and abroad;
¡¡¡¡Become the core force in international DNA sequencing service centers and biology resource study and development in China;
¡¡¡¡Build up an information processing system that is capable of taking part in the world competition to meet the urgent needs of under going researches on super hybrid rice genome, porcine genome and polymorphism of Chinese genome;
¡¡¡¡Establish a comprehensive bio-information database with Chinese character and international influence;
¡¡¡¡Provide technological support to bio-technological industry development and grow through industrialization and finally achieve the goal of maintaining and developing totally depend on ourselves.

Yang Huanming, the director of Beijing Genomics Institute, Wang Jian, Yu Jun, Liu Siqi, Hu Songnian, Dong Wei, and Wang Jun, total seven people, won the prize named "Seeking Truth Significant Sci-Tech Accomplishment in 2002" award by Seeking Truth Foundation of Hong Kong, acting by China Association of Science and Technology. The prize of 2 million Yuan in total was donated to rice genome project.

¡¶Scientific American¡·magazine honored Yang Huanming and Yu Jun as Research Leader of the Year for their accomplishments in 2001-2002.

Completed detailed map of Chinese indica rice genome and rice chromosome 4.
American journal ¡¶Science¡·awarded the refined map of genomic sequencing of the indica rice as the third accomplishment of the World' s 10 Top Scientific Achievements in 2002.

 

May 2003

 

Produced the world first rice genome chip with high accuracy, high density, high coverage rate and high representation.

2003

 

Completed genome sequences of four SARS isolates and quickly developed "Detecting Reagent for SARS Virus", which is based on ELISA£¨Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbant Assay£©therefore become the world first center capable of producing SARS diagnose reagent in large scale.

 

June 2003

 

With the collaboration of scientists from the Beijing Genome Research Institute under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and China's Southwest Agricultural University, complete sequencing work and basic research of silkworm genome in June 2003, complete the assembly and information analysis at the end of Oct 2003, that is the first time of exploring the character of silkworm genome and gene from whole genome point of view.

 

2003 In order to smoothly complete international HaplotypeMap project, establish the China first SNP typing platform with the feature of high through out, good resolution factor and low cost that lay the solid foundation for independent analysis on haplotype map of organism.
