¡¡¡¡Following the completion of genome sequencing work of several important
species, biologists are facing a task of clarifying functions of coding
genes. The biology chip technology emerged as the times require and turned
into a basic way to clarify the functions of coding genes. Just like micro-electronic
chip that completely changed life styles of people in some ten years,
biology chip technology will once again conduce a scientific and technological
revolution with profound significance. As a part of genetic industry,
biology chip technology could be used in clinical diagnosis, discovering
new drugs, monitoringthe environmental and agricultural areas. These practices
will modify the study method of life science, reform the concept of clinical
diagnosis and treatment and moreover bring profound impact on human life
and health in many aspects. £ £
¡¡¡¡Since biology chip technology is significant in both theory research and
practical usage, America announced officially the startup of biology chip
project in 1998. Several organizations taking part in the projects include:
United States Department of Health and Human Services
(HHS), Department of Energy , Department of Commerce, Department of Justice,Department
of Defense, Central Intelligence Agency, Stanford University, Massachusetts
Institute of Technology and some National Laboratories. After research
of several years, biology chip related industry grew up rapidly. Up to
now, more than 10 biology chip companies in US are listed on the stock
market and the stock value goes up by 75% each year. According to the statistics
of expert, the production value of biology chip industry in the world
reached one billion US dollars. Within next five years, the expected sale of
biology chip will exceed 20 billion US
dollars. It is no doubt that biology chip
industry has broad market perspective.
¡¡¡¡BGI started research related to biology chip in early days. We led the
production of rice genome chip relying on the capability of carrying out
large-scale sequencing and high performance data processing. The
feedback on the test results coming from Chinese and overseas researchers showed that chip
quality meets the need of experiments. Up to now, the rice chip and related
techniques already matured and is ready for marketing. Based on the works
we have done, a protein chip platform depending on large-scale eukaryote
and prokaryote gene cloning, protein expression and purification technology has been established.
¡¡¡¡In order to maintain our strong feature in both gene and protein
studies and enhance the advantage we already have, BGI integrated DNA chip,
protein chip and cDNA library to a new biology chip platform and is investing
more to the platform. We will collaborate closely with Chinese and overseas
researchers to dedicate our technological advantage to biology chip studies
and applications.

Team members
¡¡¡¡The team is led by the major founder of protein chip, Dr. Zhu Heng,
and gets advice while making decision from technology advisory committee
which is composed by well known scientists in the world. The scholars who
are well experienced in molecular biology and biology chip areas make
the major research force while a group of vigorous young students work
at the front line.
